The Travel Bug Guide to the Guides
Our quick and easy, grossly generalized guide to the various different guidebook companies out there. We cover their scope and target audience to help you figure out where you belong.

Bradt Travel Guides
All of Bradt's titles, with excellent links to related destinations.

Lonely Planet
The website of this publisher, the source of the guidebooks which have become near-bibles for many travellers, is detailed and fun. The Lonely Planet folks provide some very interesting and useful information, such as how to avoid getting sick at the destination of your choice, and what background reading you should undertake before you go. They also host a massive travel forum where travellers post about their experiences (good and bad).

Moon Publications
A rapidly-improving site that features not only a comprehensive listing of Moon's guidebooks, but several innovative, interactive sections as well. For instance, you'll find posted a rough draft of "Road Trip USA" . Edit the manuscript, add your own comments, or make suggestions as to your experiences off the nation's interstates. You'll also find a cool hypertext version of Moon's Big Island of Hawaii Handbook, and a Trans-Cultural Study guide from the organization Volunteers in Asia. There is also an online version of Moon's excellent newsletter, Travel Matters.

Rick Steves' Europe Through the Back Door
If you've never heard of Rick Steves, then stop here to discover what makes him the "guru" of travel to Europe. The site includes Rick's latest newsletter articles, guidebook updates (i.e. chapters that didn't make it into the print editions), reader feedback, and the original scrips for his TV shows (before being softened for mass consumption). Also check out his "Graffiti Wall", where travellers post tips about destinations and accommodation, and where you can also post a question that other travellers can answer.

Rough Guide
Rough Guide is the latest (that I've discovered) of the big guidebook companies to go online. Janelle from Rough Guide was kind enough to send me a description of their site."Our web site does not merely contain "excerpts" from the Rough Guide, but has the complete text from some of their guidebooks. Our "attempt" to get on the web includes over 1000 HTML documents in all. The entire text of all 78 Rough Guides books will eventually be in our database. If you look closely, you will notice that the USA Rough Guide database is far and away the most complete travel resource on the Web for this country."

Let's Go
Let's Go, the ultimate student and budget travel guidebook series that turned 50 years old in 2010, has a fairly comprehensive website. It contains a great variety of travel stories, videos, pictures, hotel recommendations, and links to Let's Go books for all of the regions that the company covers. Also, check out the "Deals" tab for the latest in budget-saving deals for car rentals, hotels, etc.

Dorling Kindersley (DK)
The massive DK book company also has a comprehensive website. This link is to the Canadian site and specifically to the travel sub-section, since DK publishes in so many different genres. It is also possible to visit the US and UK sites easily.

The Internet Guide to Hostelling
Hostelling is not everyone's idea of a good time or how to get to know a country (personally, I can think of better ways to experience a new place than by sharing my bedroom with forty European teenagers), but it is undeniably cheap and a very traditional way to travel. This new and growing guide is a fine resource for those who take the hostel experience seriously, including lists of hostels, experiences of other hostellers, information and international transportation, and lists of good guidebooks. Also check out Hostelling International (HI) for some of the cleanest, safest, and most well-run hostels in the world. Membership is required, but it is usually worth the nominal fee if you frequently use hostels.

The Burnt-out Traveller
The blog of a local travel writer and Travel Bug employee, The Burnt-out Traveller provides insight, encouragement, tips, advice, and hopefully inspiration to those who feel that the pace of modern life is burning them out and that travel, the supposed reprive, can sometimes only further the problem. You will find new ideas, destinations, and perspectives that may make your trip a relatively stress-free and fulfilling experience.

One of the premiere up-and-coming food bloggers in Vancouver, Michael Ranalletta (aka "Champ") will send you on the right path to food fulfillment in one of the greatest, and most underrated, culinary destinations in North America. Auto Europe
This online rental car consolidator deals with all of the major international rental car companies to give you the best possible rate. It is typically much cheaper than if you were to rent directly in Europe. You pay Auto Europe directly and receive a voucher via email. Simply take that voucher directly to the rental company in your destination, as stipulated on the voucher, and your car will be waiting. Any problems, and Auto Europe has 24-hour assistance via phone. Also, the rate includes all fees and any manditory insurance (i.e. in Italy).
